Veteran Employment Services — Northwest Michigan Works!

At Northwest Michigan Works!, we’re committed to helping military service members and veterans successfully transition from military service to meaningful civilian careers. Our team understands the unique skills and strengths you bring — and we make sure employers see them too.

Priority of Service

Military service members and veterans (and eligible spouses) receive priority of service — meaning you’ll be given access to job search assistance and training before the general public whenever possible, in accordance with federal guidelines. This helps make sure your transition support is timely and tailored to your needs.

What We Can Help You With

Our Staff are designed to support you every step of the way in your job search and career planning:

  • Translate Military Experience: We help you clearly describe your military training and skills so employers understand what you bring to the table.
  • Career Targeting: Identify the jobs that match your interests and experience.
  • Training & Skill Building: Get connected with additional training, certifications, or education opportunities to strengthen your career options.
  • Resume Development: Create a polished, effective résumé tailored to civilian jobs.
  • Interview Preparation: Practice and prepare so you feel confident and ready.
  • Veteran-Friendly Employer Connections: We can help you find and connect with employers who actively seek and value veteran talent.

Additional Support

We also partner closely with the State of Michigan’s Veterans Employment Services program, with specialists right here in our service centers. If you qualify, you’ll work side-by-side with a fellow veteran who specializes in helping you overcome specific challenges and navigate your job search. We’ll work together across all our programs to ensure you have the comprehensive support you deserve.

How to Get Started

  1. Visit any Northwest Michigan Works! service center in your area (such as Traverse City, Cadillac, Manistee, or Petoskey).
  2. Let staff know you’re a veteran so you can be connected with a Veterans Career Advisor.
  3. Veterans Orientation sessions are currently on hold and are expected to be available soon through the Veterans Career Advisor (VCA) in Traverse City.

Why It Matters

Your military experience has given you valuable skills — leadership, discipline, technical ability, teamwork — that are highly sought after by employers. Northwest Michigan Works! helps you leverage those strengths, find the right opportunities, and confidently take the next step in your career journey.
